Chiropractor for Sciatica

Learn how chiropractic helps sciatica

sciaticaThe sciatic nerve runs from your lower back down through the buttock and down the leg to your foot. It is a large nerve that helps the leg to move and feel sensation. The term ‘sciatica’ describes the pain, tingling or numbness s that follows the path of the nerve. You can have sciatica in one leg or both legs at the same time. Ryde Chiropractic may help find the cause of your sciatica and use techniques which may ease your pain.

Common causes of sciatica

Here are some of the most common causes of sciatica.

Referred pain – irritation of the joints, muscles and ligaments in the lower back and pelvis can send pain down the leg, usually not below the knee.

Nerve Compression or irritation – this can commonly come from disc injuries, spinal stenosis or a condition called piraformis syndrome.

  • Disc injuries in between the bones in your lower back can bulge and put pressure on the nerve roots that make up the sciatic nerve. Is some instances this can require surgery.
  • Spinal stenosis is a condition of narrowing or the space in which your spinal cord sits, causing compression on the cord and the nerves. The narrowing is usually from degenerative change, though it could also be from tumours, structural deformities, fractures or cysts.
  • Piraformis syndrome is a condition in which the piraformis muscle in your buttock irritates the sciatic nerve as it passes through.
