Researching chiropractic for headaches?

headaches

Headaches affect thousands of people in Australia every day. It is estimated that 4.9 million people in Australia people suffer from migraines and up to 7 million suffer from tension type headache. (1)

Ryde Chiropractic may be able to help.

Common types of headaches

There are many types of headaches. Here are the most common that we see in our practice:

  • Tension headaches – this is the most common type of headache. It causes dull, aching head pain, that often feels like a tight band around the head. It often comes with tenderness on the scalp, neck and shoulder muscles.
  • Cervicogenic (neck) headaches – The pain caused by a cervicogenic headache begins in the neck and the back of the head and can radiates towards the front of the head.
  • Migraines – These headaches often include throbbing pain, nausea or vomiting and even sensitivity to sound or light. The exact cause of migraines is still unknown, though it is believed that genetics play a role. As such, it can run in families and can affect people of any age.

In some cases, a headache is a medical emergency. If we suspect that your headache is not within the scope of our care, we will immediately refer you to the appropriate medical facility.

Chiropractic treatment for headaches

Studies have shown that chiropractic may be effective in treating tension headache and migraines (2,3). The use of spinal manipulation, the most prevalent chiropractic technique, was shown to help decrease symptoms and improve outcomes for those suffering those kinds of headaches. This correlates with what Dr. Anthony Leong (Chiropractor) and his team have observed in practice over the last two decades. More research needs to be done on the topic and no individual study is definitive.

Proper headache treatment first starts with discovering what kind of headache that you have. Once we have diagnosed your headache during your initial consultation, the appropriate care will be recommended. For headache patients, we often focus on improving movement in the joints of your neck with spinal adjustments, relax stiff and tight muscles with muscle releases and recommend exercises to help further your results. We also provide advice tailored to your situation which may include choice of pillow, posture and ergonomic advice, exercise habits and more.
