Learn how chiropractors help neck pain

neck pain

Neck pain is second most common reason people attend Ryde Chiropractic, lower back pain being the most common. Neck pain can range from a mild muscular ache to severe sharp pain in the neck, contributing to headaches and pain down the arm. Whilst there arm many causes of neck pain, the most common one that we see in this digital age relates to posture. It is also commonly related to previous car accidents and degenerative changes.

What makes up the neck?

The neck back spans between the base of your skull and your shoulders and can relate problems in both. The neck is made up of seven moveable bones called cervical vertebrae and the discs, which act as shock absorbers, in between them. They are held together by many ligaments and muscles, and the vital spinal nerves come out from between each vertebra. Altogether, the system works to allow you to have freedom of movement, vital for orientating your head and vision, whilst having strength and support to protect your spinal cord and nerves.

Common causes of neck problems

There are many causes of back pain. Here are the most common that we see:

  • Poor posture – especially in this digital age, the common culprits are mobile phones, laptops, work computers and tablets.
  • Incorrect sitting habits and poor work ergonomics
  • Trauma from car accidents, work and sport.
  • Muscle tension
  • Arthritis and degeneration

Neck pain treatment and Chiropractic

In our office, we have found that a combination of spinal adjustments, also known as spinal manipulation, an effective exercise program and lifestyle advice has helped many patients experiencing neck pain. Multi-modal treatments may also be effective.

The goal of the hands on chiropractic care is to decrease pain in your neck, improve movement and mobility, ease muscle spasm, and increase function.

The goal of the exercise is to increase flexibility, strength and stability and improve posture.

The lifestyle advice will be tailor made for your situation which may include advice about your mobile phone use, laptop use, work posture, sitting and sleeping position, exercise habits and more.
