Chiropractic for Mid-Back Pain

Chiropractors commonly care for people with mid-back pain or thoracic pain. For some it may feel like an ache in between the shoulder blades that gets worse after long periods in front of a computer. For others it can also feel like a sharp pain associated with an area of the spine that feels stiff. Like lower back pain and neck pain, common causes include working in front of a computer, poor posture and trauma. Ryde Chiropractic can help.

What makes up the mid-back?

The mid-back or thoracic spine spans between your neck to your lower back. It is made up of 12 moveable bones called thoracic vertebrae and the discs in between them and the rib cage. They are held together by many ligaments and muscles, and the spinal nerves come out from between each vertebra. The ribs attaches to the spine at the back and travel to the front of the chest joining onto the sternum. The shoulder blades sit over the ribs on either side of the spine with many muscles attaching your spine, shoulders and shoulder blades together. Altogether, the system works to allow you to have freedom of movement particularly for twisting movements, smooth shoulder movements and have the strength and support to protect your spinal cord, nerves and vital organs within your rib cage.

Common causes of mid-back pain

There are many causes of back pain. Here are the most common that we see:

  • Poor posture
  • Incorrect sitting habits and poor office ergonomics
  • Trauma from sport, work, slips or falls
  • Stiff and inflamed spinal joints.
  • Muscle tension
  • Arthritis and degeneration
  • Scoliosis

How Ryde Chiropractic can help

In our office, we have found that a combination of spinal adjustments, soft tissue releases, an effective exercise program and lifestyle advice has helped many patients experiencing mid back pain. We also assess rib movement to help your rib cage function with more ease. The hands on chiropractic care can help improve movement and mobility, ease muscle spasm, and increase function. The exercise can help to increase mobility, strength and to improve posture. The lifestyle advice will be tailor made for your situation which may include advice about your work posture, sitting and sleeping position, exercise habits and more.

There are of course some rarer serious causes of thoracic pain, which include heart issues. If we suspect your pain is coming from one of these causes, we will immediately refer you for the appropriate assessment and treatment outside our practice.
